Cooking with Kids in the Summer

by Pat Ciesla

School is out, soccer is over and league baseball has come to an end for the kids. So what to do now? How about going to the kitchen and creating something fun. Cooking with kids is fun and the kitchen can be a 'cool' kitchen.

Invite their friends over and have a party. There are lots of new cookies, popsicles and ice cream recipes that kids can make with a little supervision. How about the new Peanut butter and jelly cookies? You start with slice and bake cookies from the grocery. Smear with peanut butter and jelly and bake. Now just eat. What could be simpler?

Or a play day with your time share kids. Make your own play doh or bubbles. Have a contest as to who can make the biggest bubble or be the most creative with play doh. You can do all kinds of coloring with food colors. Just mix them in a dish to get that wonderful purple or neon green and then add into the doh.

Spend some quality time and bond with those little ones who won't be little long. Cooking with kids forms lifelong bonds.

About Pat: On one hand, Pat is a true sophisticate.  A seasoned traveler, she has both lived abroad and traveled extensively.  In her travels, she has compiled recipes from every country she visited, buying cookbooks as she went.

But there is another side to Pat, one that shows its face when she is home.  Then she works with kids in the the 4-H clubs, though not always just cooking.  She tells us, "For the last 11 years I have been key project leader for Heritage Arts  which includes projects such as weaving, spinning dyeing, basketry, crochet, stitchery. I am also a judge. It is tough keeping on the right hat, but I manage to stay impartial.

Asked about cooking with kids, she tells us that, "My 4-H kids at nine can make really good nut breads/muffins, jams, and can do cake decorating that will beat any bakery.
