Glühwein

This translates into "glow wine."  Is it a holiday glow you want?  You can count on that.   Merry Christmas!

  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 8 whole cloves
  • One 750-millimeter bottle red wine (a hearty red wine works best)
  • 8 to 10 orange slices for garnish

Method

Add the water, sugar, and cinnamon sticks to a medium-size saucepan.  Heat until just boiling, then reduce to a simmer.

Add the orange juice, zest, and cloves to the simmering water mixture.  Simmer for 30 minutes.

Strain the mixture over another pot and discard the cloves and cinnamon.  Add the wine tot he liquid.  Heat over medium heat until everything is toasty, but not boiling.

Add 1 orange slice apiece tot he bottom of 8 to 10 sturdy goblets.  Pour an equal amount of the Glühwein into each glass.  Prost!  Zum wohl!

Serves: 8 to 10
