Method
In medium bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt.
Using a pastry blender , cut 2 tablespoons of shortening into the mixture until it looks like oatmeal flakes.
In a separate bowl, combine the egg and milk. Add to dry mixture and combine well.
Pat frankfurters dry with paper towels. Dip franks into batter coat all sides. Use a pair of tongs to do this as you don't want to pierce the frankfurters. Don't coat the franks too heavily as you want light crisp crustiness.
Drop 1 or 2 at a time into hot oil in mini-fryer. Fry until golden, about 1 minute on each side. Insert wooden skewer in end of each. Serve hot, with mustard, if desired.
