Ahoy Matey Hot Dog

A perennial favorite with kids

  • Enough franks for the number of kids
  • Mustard or ketchup

Method

This simple technique of cutting the hot dog will create the illusion of arms and legs when the hot dog cooks.

Freeze franks until they are semi-frozen.  To create 'arms' - use a sharp knife (the grown-up does this!), and make a straight horizontal slit about an inch from the top. Then make a slit upward on both sides of the frank.

To create the legs - From the bottom of the frank, make a 1" slit upwards.

Put franks under the broiler.  in the oven. The slits will curl as the hot dog cooks.

When cooked, dot with ketchup or mustard at the top to make a face.  Imagination holds sway and you can put shoes on the feet, buttons down the center, gloves on the hands, a jacket, even trousers. This part is goopy fun, and if the adult does one, the kids can take over while the grown-up washes the sharp knife!
