Kentucky Sorghum Cake

You will sometimes find this sorghum cake served in fine restaurants in Kentucky.

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup of sour milk or buttermilk click for note
  • 1/2 cup of sorghum molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (you may use cake flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg


Preheat oven to 325°F.

In a large bowl cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add egg, and continue beating until well-mixed and lemony colored.

Combine milk and molasses.

Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Blend molasses mixture and dry ingredients alternately into creamed butter. Beat three minutes with a mixer.

Pour batter into a greased 8 X 8 X 2 inch baking pan. Bake in a preheated 325°F oven for 45 minutes.

Serves 6 to 8.
