Chocolate Oatmeal Squares

"I learned this from my Mom when I was a boy."  Roger Manley

  • 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine
  • 6 tablespoon white sugar
  • 6 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon  vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon water
  • 1 egg        
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup chocolate chips  

 

 

METHOD

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Combine butter or margarine with both sugars, vanilla, water and egg.  Mix well. 

In a second bowl mix together flour, salt, soda and oatmeal.

Add second mixture to the first. Stir just to mix. Put into greased  9'x13' pan.  Sprinkle chocolate chips over top.

Put in preheated 375°F degree oven for 3 minutes.

Remove from oven run knife through the dough to marble the melting chocolate.  Return to oven for 12-14 minutes- WATCH CAREFULLY NOT TO OVERBAKE.

Remove from oven, cool slightly and cut in bars-

Yield: About 12 bars, depending on cut
