Method
Note: You can bake this super-rich cake in a single layer pan for a sheet cake, or get fancy and make it a three-layer creation."
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare the cake: In a saucepan, heat the butter, Dr Pepper, and cocoa until boiling. Remove from the heat and let cool. In a mixing bowl, combine the buttermilk, baking soda, vanilla, and eggs, mixing well. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and sugar. Combine all three mixtures until blended. Pour the batter into a greased 9 by 13 by 2-inch pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until done. Test by inserting a toothpick at center of cake; if free of crumbs, it's done.
While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting by combining the butter, cocoa, and Dr Pepper in a saucepan; bring to a simmer. Whisk in the sugar and remove from heat. Cool slightly before spreading on the cake as described below.
When the cake is done, remove from the oven and pierce holes throughout the cake with a wooden skewer. Spread the frosting ont he cake and let cool.
Makes one 9 by 13-inch sheet cake or a 3-layer, 8-inch cake.
