Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

" I can remember being a very small child and my sister and I would sit on one end of the table with the colored sugar and do the decorating while she was at the other end cutting out the cookies " Nancy Spaith

  • 1/2 cup soft shortening (half butter)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon flavoring (vanilla or lemon or a combination of the two)
  • 1-1/4 cups sifted Gold Medal flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

 

 

METHOD

Preheat oven to 425° F.

Mix together thoroughly the shortening, sugar and egg.

Stir in milk or cream, and chosen flavoring.

Sift together flour baking powder and salt. Chill dough.

When chilled, roll dough very then, about 1/16th inch. Cut into desired shapes. Place on lightly greased baking sheet, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake in preheated 425° F oven for about 5 to 7 minutes.

Yield: About 5 dozen 2 1/2 inch cookies.
