Garlic on a Bread Pillow

This is a delicious appetizer that is somewhat like a garlic pizza, somewhat like a garlic bread, somewhat like..?..perhaps a garlic dumpling? Unique and original, the garlic flavor is very delicate when sliced on the diagonal. You don't have to use sea salt, but the iodized taste in plain table sauce detracts from the delicate garlic flavor.

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh garlic, sliced on the diagonal
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup butter, chilled
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh dill
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup extra sharp Cheddar

METHOD

Preheat oven to 450 ° F.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in frying pan. Put in onions and cook to soften, about ten minutes. Add garlic slices and cook one minute more.

Sift together flour, baking powder. Cut butter into pea-sized pieces. Cut into flour mixture until it resembles oatmeal. 1/4 cup butter until mixture is crumbly like cornmeal.  Sprinkle on parsley, dill. Pour in milk and stir just until evenly mixed.

Pour batter into well-greased 8 x 8-inch pan and spread evenly with a spatula.  Spread garlic and onions on top, then sprinkle on cheese. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in preheated 450 ° F oven.

Cool for ten minutes on a rack, and cut into small pieces.

Serves: 6 - 8
