Dietary Fiber Dietary fiber is the part of a plant that is not digested by the body's enzymes and passes through the system undigested. Our mothers called it 'roughage' but it is a form of carbohydrate. Most processed food do not provide enough fiber, so eat those fresh fruits and vegetables in the recommended amount. The minimum recommended amount of 20-35 grams of dietary fiber per day for adults. Fiber may lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes and is crucial to maintaining bowel regularity. It binds with some substances that would normally encourage the production of cholesterol. Fiber is further broken down into many elements, but the general guideline is to eat a lot of fiber. |
