Tea and a Woeful Pinky Crisis

Melissa Mitchell - 'A Woman of Woe'

Editor's Note: When we wrote our article about high tea and low tea, we were amused by the etiquette which required arching the pinky. We wrote the article, laughing as we wrote, hoping it would put a smile on other people's faces. The favor was returned when we opened an e-mail to discover that it was not only amusement, but inspiration to Melissa Mitchell. She calls herself a 'woman of woe,' but is full of mirth and laughter. Enjoy Melissa's crisis and also read our article "High Tea, Low Tea or What the Polite Young Woman Does With Her Pinkie Whilst Drinking Tea ." You'll find recipes there. We are happy to learn that pinky-arching has not gone out of style. And remember that if you have a pinky crisis of your own, you can tell us about it: pinky crisis

Tea and a Woeful Pinky Crisis

by Melissa Mitchell

I found myself in a moment not so long ago, that was SO extreme I had to contact you to let you know...

You see it happened about a week ago.. I was just sitting down for a cup of hot tea and a lovely crumpet, that my mother had made earlier that morning. Well, I was about halfway through my joyous cup of tea when IT HAPPEND!! (I first must warn you...what I am about to say my cause you Great Grief .)

While holding my cup of tea I also had my pinky finger tucked ever so gently under and away from the hot cup, so not to cause a burn... BUT.. as I was setting the cup down, my pinky finger went and CRUSHED the TOP of MY CRUMPET!!! Which I must inform you was sitting on my doilie lined plate!

Well when I realized what I did, I Immediately FLUNG my pinky into a 60* arched angle.. and quickly swallowed the remaining sip of tea and proceeded to quickly run to my room and hide to avoid the harsh punishment from my mother, for NOT ONLY ruining a perfectly decadent crumpet .. but for putting myself in such a predicament that would cause me such anguish that I would have to bring my finger to such an arch of arrogance and disgrace!!

So in closing .. whenever eating crumpets and tea PLEASE use separate plates!!!
