The story
of a book, by Jonathan Cutler and Lanny Udell
This is a love story. It began with
an idea that grew in our hearts and flourished in a matter of months,
as love often does.
It was July 4th of 2001 and Lanny
was waxing nostalgic over her late mother's potato salad - the written
recipe long lost to time. Like a lot of men, I only half listened. (Mea
culpa) But when I finally tuned in, I realized that she had touched
on something important - that many of us hunger for the flavors we grew
up on in the 1940's, 50's and early '60s. As she talked on, the idea
for a warm and nostalgic cookbook with personal recollections and vintage
family photos was born.
So we put the word out. First to
friends and family, and then to anyone who would listen, and nearly
everyone did. The mere mention of mom's cooking never failed to bring
a smile or a frown (depending) and almost always, a trip down memory
lane. In the end, people from all over the country sent us recipes and
trusted us with irreplaceable personal photographs.
Talk about being in love - the book
arose from our passion for cooking, writing and all things retro. Having
the opportunity to share our contributors' personal memories and recipes
feels to us like a great privilege.
To say we are gratified wouldn't
even come close.
