Sally Sampson is the author of several cookbooks, all of them testifying to her ingenuity and talent.  The 100-Calorie Snack Book continues that tradition, but also offers the reader the opportunity to stop buying overpriced packaged snack foods, and create more delicious, nourishing snacks with less fuss than once would imagine.  And there is a delicious surprise in the book - in the collection of 100-calorie recipes many could have the portions doubled and eaten as meals, rather than snacks. These are wholesome snacks, in addition to ones being low in calories, and you will no longer reach for a bag of chips with the ever-broken promise of having just one.

Sampson has collected common-sense snacks that we've forgotten as well as added some inventive gourmet recipes to satisfy our desire for the new.   There are more than 200 recipes in this book, divided into unique divisions:

Soups
Eggs
Salty
Creamy and Cheesy
Crunchy
Brownies Carbs
Salads
Vegetables
Protein
Fruit Desserts
Frozen Desserts
Cookies, Brownies and That Sort of Thing
Beverages

Within these various categories you will find 100-calorie sweets, such as Chocolate Truffles, Peanut Butter Milkshake, and Delicious Brownies. Rather than a plain piece of fruit as a snack, you can dress the fruit to have a sweeter satisfaction with recipes such as Berry Rhubarb Compote, or Figs and Raspberries, dressed up with a touch of honey, cocoa powder and yogurt.

Replace the fattening chips with Beet Chips, roasted with a touch of salt and olive oil,  or Peanut-Butter Banana Apple Bites enlivened with cinnamon, or Pickled Carrots with Caraway that will stay in the fridge to satisfy the snack urge for up to a month.  If you want a creamy taste, try a Rice Cake with Goat Cheese and Olive  Oil,  or lacy Parmesan Flats, or Buffalo Blue Cheese BBQ Rice Crackers.  For a quick shot of protein, try Cucumber and Shrimp Salad or Smoked Turkey Wrapped in Romaine Lettuce.   Sampson's variations are endless.

There are color photos by Carl Tremblay throughout, and each recipe has nutrition information, giving calories, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fiber, and protein.
